A basic use-case driven UML process as suggested by Jacobson is now well understood. In this paper, we report on experiences made in the CAPE-OPEN initiative, a worldwide standardization effort of the chemical industries focusing on the following question: How can such a software development process be used in a standardization effort especially if (a) the software to be developed is component software with strict inter-operation requirements, and (b) there is the need not only to specify the standard but also to support its acceptance among users? A sketch of an enhanced version of the Unified Process together with a suite of supporting tools is presented as a way towards a solution.
