This paper presents an approach to support the development and operation of extended enterprises. The approach is based on utilising Active Knowledge Models (AKM). AKM is a visual model of enterprise aspects that can be viewed, traversed, analysed, simulated, adapted and executed by industrial users. The AKM approach has been the basis for the EXTERNAL project (IST 1999-10091). A major result of the project is the implementation of AKM in an intelligent infrastructure. The AKM and the intelligent infrastructure have been tested and further developed within three different industrial use cases in the project. One of the uses cases, concerning the software sub-contracting delivery process (SSDP) in a Greek group of consulting companies, is presented in detail.
