The exchange of partial model data has been a hot topic because of an increase in the use of model server applications on the Internet. When considering the interaction between model server and clients, what is important, is flexibility, programmability and Internet friendly ability to realize the exchange of partial models. The Partial Model Query Language, PMQL was designed for this purpose. The PMQL is an XML language that enables the selection of a particular group of objects in the data set. The first implementation of the PMQL engine was developed with a model server that works on the Internet. The client software sends PMQL as a partial model data request to the model server, and receives the result of the partial model data from model server. The paper describes an approach to partial model data selection for STEP object models, especially the Industry Foundation Classes, IFC.
