The report contains theoretical analysis of mode structures in the stable ring cavity. The cited dependencies make it possible to choose optimum parameters of the cavity and the aperture that provide an acceptable level of diffractive losses of the principal mode together with the guaranteed suppression of higher-order modes. There has been offered a new approach to forecasting the ring helium-neon laser lifetime. There have been identified basic factors that determine a change in the characteristics of gas discharge during the first thousand hours in the operation of the ring laser. There has been carried out a complex estimation of the ring laser quality.
