One of the objective of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) cereals programme is to evaluate genetic material, originating from breeding programmes for low input systems (high disease and lodging resistance, low seeding rate, standard quality) under organic farming crop system. We also aim to define important agronomic characteristics of cultivar types adapted to organic farming. Preliminary yield results showed that varieties developed for integrated farming with high disease resistance are suitable for production under organic conditions. But baking quality was really a problem linked to nutrient acquisition ability : nitrogen uptake and nitrogen-use-efficiency. For these characters there is a need to select novel lines. The competitiveness of varieties to weeds could not be studied due to lack of weeds in our locations. However, it remains unclear to date whether the differences between low input and organic growing systems are large enough to justify breeding varieties inboth farming systems.
