Thinopyrum chromosomes that determine salt tolerance in a Th. distichumi 4x rye (Secale cereale) hybrid could be identified by their C-bands, RFLP bands; diagnostic for the group 2; 3; 4 and 5 homoeologues of wheat; two SCAR markers and a novel Est-5 polymorphism; cosegregated with the respective critical Thinopyrum chromosomes. In an attempt to transfer tolerance genes to triticale; secondary hybrids from the cross: triticale 3*/7%. distichum are being screened for single chromosome addition plants. Disomic additions corresponding to the group 3 and 5 markers were recovered and crossed with triticale monosomies for the corresponding homoeologues. Double monosomies were derived for each of the six combinations and testcrossed with triticale. The backcross material is being screened for Robertsonian translocations.
