In the oilfield industry, stable water-in-oil emulsions can form due to turbulence phenomena in the choke valve at the wellhead. In order to better understand the main parameters that control the formation of these emulsions, the pumping conditions of both fluids water and oil are simulated through a choke valve - modeled by a calibrated orifice - thanks to a specific set-up developed by IFF. Drop break-up process and physico-chemical transformations in the emulsions are characterised by image analysis and DSC technique respectively. The results show two distinct behaviours according to whether the water-cut value is below or above 60%.
