We have identified corrensite and corrensite-like mixed-layer clay minerals in two basins, one in Argentina and one in USA. In both instances, these minerals are associated with a depositional environment of carbonates deposited in warm, shallow, marine seas. They are a potential correlation tool and, because no two of the corrensites that we studied were the same, may be (1) indicators of depositional conditions and diagenesis, and (2) site specific. Individual characteristics were discerned using experimental and calculated X-ray diffraction tracings. Some samples met the AIPEA nomenclature committees requirements for the mineral corrensite, but several were best modeled at ratios slightly different than 50:50 corrensite: smectite. Small amounts in excess of 50% of either component can be detected in samples with an apparently rational series of basal reflections.
