The development of optimal treatment strategies adapted to individual patients, and identification of novel molecular targets for therapy require further insights into molecular aspects of glioblastoma development. Gene expression profiles of over 50 astroeytic gliomas provided evidence for inherent differences between tumor classes. Subsequent identification of correlated genes best differentiating between primary glioblastoma, low grade astrocytoma, and respective secondary glioblastoma revealed biological features implicating differences in the behavior of the tumors. In particular angiogenic activity is as a strong predictor of subtypes as indicated by a separating gene cluster characterized by angiogenic factors. A gene expression based tumor classifier was built and tested successfully on an independent set of astrocytic glioma.
