The Excavation and Mining Equipment Group (BGMR) at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, developed a tool calculating production capacities for shearer loaders called ProSL. Based on this tool, the impact of different cutting sequences and cutting/haulage motors on the performance of longwall systems can be analysed. After briefly describing state-of-the-art cycles the calculation tool is presented. A case study simulation delivers the essential message of this paper: The BGMR experienced that an appropriate cutting sequence has often a higher impact on productivity than switching to bigger machines. The authors conclude that sophisticated longwall methods are the best way to enlarge productivity - especially as technical and financial challenges due to more motor power and longer face lengths are becoming limiting factors.
