Quarry activity and hydrogeological risk in colluvium and talus deposits in Piedmont Region (NW Italy)

Physical and chemical weathering of bedrock produces disaggregated particles that accumulate on the land surface. Gravitational forces (usually trough rock falls and debris flows) cause debris to move down slopes and accumulate as distinctive deposits along the lower portions of slopes. These deposits are usually made up of wedge-shaped rock fragments of any size and shape (usually coarse and angular) and fine-grained material. Such deposits frequently need to be partially excavated to allow the passage of transportation facilities and, sometimes, can be used to produce aggregates or blocks for masonry. In Piedmont (NW Italy) the latter cases are concentrated in only few valleys. Although local authorities pay a lot of attention to site management and monitoring, the relationships between these natural phenomena and human activities are not well known yet and, of course, need to be developed. In this paper a general review of these situations is given, and particular attention will be focus to geomorphologic aspects coupled with textural properties of the deposits. This information should be very useful to authorities to decide if quarry activity is compatible or not with other facilities, and if an adequate quarry planning can even reduce risk conditions.
