Selecting post mining land use through analytical hierarchy processing method: case study in Sungun copper open pit mine of Iran

Currently metal projects are facing with booming metal price and descending cut-off grade. In open pit mining, lower cut-off grade causes deeper ultimate pit limits and more pit area, more waste removal and then more area for waste dumping and tailing storage which altogether means more disturbed lands. Increasing enforcement of rigid environment protection rules in most countries makes it obligatory to find a suitable post mining land use for these increasing amounts of disturbed lands. The most familiar post mining land uses are agriculture, pasture, forestry and tourist attraction. Selecting suitable post mining land use requires valuation of the impressive factors such as topography, climate conditions, slope, elevation, geology, soil properties, hydrology, exposure to sunshine , ecology, geography, accessibility, size and shape of the site, adjacent area conditions, population characteristics and mine ownership. This study deals with evaluation of mined lands in order to select suitable uses for them by Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). In evaluation process, all impressive factors on possible uses are weighted and then all of them become scored for these uses. The total score of a specific site is achieved through adding up the given scores to the all impressive factors on selecting the land use for the site, after multiplying the scores by their relative weights. If the total score of a site is between 16-20, the suitable post mining land use will be agriculture, if it is between 12-16 the suitable use will be pasture, the score of 8-12 means the suitable use is foresting, but if the total score is between 4-8, the preferred use is tourists attraction activities and the lower rank shows that the site just could be habitable by vast civil investment, if there is a economic vindication. In this study after showing the methodology, the desirable post mining land use for Sungun copper open pit mine of Iran is selected by the proposed method. Sungun copper mine is an operating mine and its effected land after exhausting the deposit will be 38.2 squared kilometres. Prior mining land uses of Sungun area were forest and pasture and the methodology showed forestry as the suitable post mining land use.
