As far as territorial infrastructure projects are concerned, many are the aspects that one should evaluate for a correct environmental compatibility assessment, taking into account both the construction phase and the running condition: from the impacts on the different environmental components (such as soil stability, geological types, water quality, hydrogeological variations, noise and vibrations production, air emissions, etc.) to the interferences between project and landscape. From this point of view, the evaluation becomes an essential tool starting from the very preliminary steps of the project, because it allows to identify the environmental critical states, to plan the suitable mitigation and compensation measures and to set up a fit monitoring system. The object of the paper is to provide an outline of the main environmental problems involved in infrastructure projects, taking into consideration a real application. The case study refers to the environmental assessment of the project for the development of the port node of Genova (Italy).
