Quality assurance of the particular components of the development cycle becomes instrumental in achieving high rate of advance in a lateral development process. The development practices at hard rock mines of Falconbridge Ltd. and Boliden AB, in Canada and Sweden respectively, are captured and simulated using discrete event simulation. The practices are analyzed to identify quality issues, as they relate to cost, speed, and overall performance. The process performance in each activity is evaluated using indices, while Pareto analysis is applied for prioritization of components causing process delays. It is found that, overall, the Boliden practice has better quality performance than the Falconbridge practice.
