Geomechanical research to design the efficient mining used on the deposits in Jiu Valley

For the purpose of increasing the mining efficiency and getting a low cost per ton of extracted coal, the undermining of thick coal beds has been widely used during these last few years. This method provides a growth of the technical and economic indices together with a diminution of the necessary preparatory operations and a diminution of the final costs per ton of extracted coal. The intricate tectonics of the coal deposit in the Jiu Valley makes this coal very difficult to mine by highly efficient mining methods. This complex tectonics is supplemented by the methane emissions, a strong coal tendency to self/ignition, and a diminished stability of roof and floor rocks, aspects that have led to the occurrence of technical accidents. This paper presents the geomechanical characteristics of the surrounding rocks and of coal from beds 3 and 5 as well the geometrical elements of this mining method the height of the coal bed the width of the strip, the method used to remove the coal. There has also been determined coal sliding degree, the angle of coal dislodging, the angle of the natural slope, the length of the caving in and the relation between the length of the caving in and the height of the coal bed.
