We have developed an optical fiber sensor for fluorescent measurement of biological activities. This probe-type sensor has a microlens at the fiber end. We constructed an optical system for fluorescent measurement with a single optical fiber. In this system, the single optical fiber (Clad/Core = 125 [μm]/50 [μm]) emits the excitation light and collects the fluorescent light at the same time. We fabricated the microlens by using the molding method, and attached it to the optical fiber end afterward. The microlens decreased the spot size of the emitted light, which excited the fluorescent dye. The light spot radius at the focal point was 25 [μm] by focusing effect of the microlens. The reduction of the spot size enables the microscopic fluorescent measurement.
