Acacia saligna and Acacia cyclops invasions destroy biodiversity of natural veld along the coastal region of the Western Cape in South Africa. Work teams are currently busy trying to eradicate the alien trees as part of the Work for Water programme in order to protect the natural species composition and to increase run-off of rain water. The question arose whether wood from these alien invaders could be utilized economically to produce charcoal for glass production to decrease the financial burden of the eradication of invader plants for the taxpayer. Planning the financial viability of harvesting, charcoal production and transporting the wood and charcoal required (1) an assessment of the quantity and distribution of invader trees by means of Remote Sensing and (2) the determination of optimal location of wood processing plants and transport routes to minimize total transport cost of wood and charcoal.
