Maximizing pork output per unit of input is the ultimate goal of modern pig production and is often achieved by maximizing muscle mass in the finishing pig. Research has shown that there are a number of different methods that can be used to increase muscle expression of the finishing pig. However, the methods applied during the finishing phase can only influence the hypertrophy of the muscle fibres that are already present. A relatively new area of study centres on the idea that fetal muscle fibre number can be increased during gestation which should allow for an enhanced response from muscle development strategies used during the grow-finish phase. This should ultimately result in a carcass with more muscle mass. This chapter will briefly outline the areas of interest that have been studied to increase fetal muscle development and focus on their ability to alter the resulting offspring carcass cut out value.
