Widespread use of antimicrobials in mastitis control has not resulted in an overall increase in resistance of mastitis pathogens to commonly used compounds (Erskine et al., 2004). However, trends in resistance differ between bacterial species and antimicrobial compounds. For example, there has been an increase in reported macrolide and lincosamide resistance of bovine streptococci. Prevalence ranges from less then 10% in studies done before 1990 to 30-50% in studies published after 2000 (Erskine et al., 2004). In several countries, macrolides (e.g. erythromycin, spiramycin) and lincosamides (e.g. pirlimycin) are labeled for use as mastitis treatment. Resistance to these compounds can be detected by phenotypic methods, e.g. agar disc diffusion tests,and genotypic methods, e.g. resistance gene detection. In this paper, we present a comparison of phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles for Streptococcus uberis isolates collected from cows with clinical mastitis in a veterinary practice in La Mayenne, France.
