On-farm culture systems used for the diagnosis of clinical mastitis have become more readily available in recent years. Many farms routinely use rapid culture based systems to identity mastitis cases that are candidates for antibiotic therapy. Broad outcome categories achievable using on farm culture results include no bacterial growth, gram positive growth only and gram negative growth only. Further information on pathogens causing infection may be obtained from using tests that have the ability todifferentiate Staphylococcus aureus from other mastitis causing organisms. The objective of this study was to evaluate two potential on farm culture systems, The Minnesota Easy Culture System II Tri-plate (1) and the 3M Petrifilm (2), for their ability to identify treatment categories (Gram positive vs. Gram Negative or No Growth) as well as their ability to diagnose S. aureus.
