In the AH-1S “Cobra” helicopter the first natural frequency of the tail rotor driveshaft is very close to the normal operating frequency. The subject of this paper is to evaluate a proposal to replace the original shaft with new ones, with larger external diameter, which will increase the margin of safety between the first natural frequency of the shaft and the nominal operating frequency of the driveshaft system. A dynamic mathematical model of the driveshaft was developed for both the original and the new shaft configurations. The results of these models were compared to FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and test results. The static strength of the shaft supports was also evaluated. Analysis results show that increasing the shaft diameter increases the margin of safety between the first natural frequency of the shaft and the nominal operating frequency from 13% to 33%, while the static load that the bearing supports are subjected to remain almost unchanged.
