N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) derived from imidazolium salts have been widely used as ancillary ligands in the organometallic chemistry. However, manipulation of the free carbene is usually not easy due to its highly reactive nature toward air and moisture. Recently, the employment of NHC adducts as protected forms of the free carbene attracted much attention for the syntheses of carbene complexes. We have recently reported synthesis of triethylborane adduct of NHC, NHC-BEt_3, which is proved to be quite useful in the introduction of the carbene ligand to a wide range of metal systems. In this presentation, we wish to report (i) the application of our method for the syntheses of bidentate carbene systems, (ii) the preparation of group 6 transition metal complexes bearing these bidentate carbene ligands, and (iii) electronic properties of the carbene ligand estimated by spectroscopic data, reactivity, and theoretical calculation studies.
