Air quality study and management is an exciting area of scientific research that needs to be better understood by a wider range of stakeholders.Stakeholders such as decision-makers in the public and private sectors ought to possess a broader knowledge of this field so that their decisions can be better guided by scientific evidence.Indeed,air quality management has become an important subject of not only scientific research but also has become an important political issue.Science should be able to provide an objective framework for considering solutions that are evidence-based.At the same time,the scientific community needs to become more conscious of the policy-making processes both locally and internationally in order to provide policy-relevant recommendations.Environmental protection,including air quality,has become an area of interest among nations - the Kyoto Protocol being an example that involves a large number of countries.Trans-boundary pollution is another central issue to the debate concerning globalization.Policies pursued within one state or region of a country often impact its neighbors' environments.Effective cooperation on environmental issues is essential as the effects of environmental pollution transcend political boundaries.International negotiations are often fractious and controversial but it is also widely accepted that collaboration is essential for achieving real improvement.
