Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-loc) plays an initial role in angiogenesis and pleiotropic response observed under hypoxia. Using immunohistochemistry we investigated hypoxia, apoptosis and bcl-2 immunoreactivity in 93 urothelial cancer (UC) specimens of the bladder. A close association between HIF-loc overexpression and poor differentiation, and a significant relationship between apoptotis and the tumor grade and stage of UCs were observed. A significant correlation between HIF-loc accumulation and apoptotic rate was also detected. As a transcriptional factor, HIF-lot transactivates genes involved in metabolism, angiogenesis and proliferation-processes that are accompanied by frequent apoptosis, probably because of the genetic instability of the aggressive tumors, leading to the production of cells undergoing apoptotic cell death.
