The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of natural fiber treatment on the flammability, mechanical and morphological properties of natural fiber filled Polypropylene (PP) composites containing Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP). Rice husk and kenaf have been used as natural fibers and were treated by alkaline treatment to modify the fiber surface. Samples were prepared by using a twin-screw extruder and followed by compression molding. The flammability properties were determined by using limiting oxygen index (LOI) test. Addition of APP into natural fiber filled PP composites was found to increase the LOI values that indicate improvement of flame retardancy properties. Incorporation of APP into natural fiber filled PP composites increased the flexural modulus of composites but decreased the flexural strength of composites. Whereas, addition of treated natural fibers into APP filled PP composites was observed to increase the flexural strength. A decrease in impact strength was observed with addition of APP in natural fibers filled PP. Incorporation of treated natural fibers into PP composites also decreased the impact strength. Morphological studies carried out with scanning electron microscopy showed that natural fiber that undergo alkaline treatment improve the dispersion of the composites and also resulting in better mechanical properties.
