Sealants(caulking compounds)are often used to prevent water intrusion through the exterior envelope of structures.To develop meaningful accelerated tests for predicting sealant service life,their performance during outdoor exposure was measured.The development of an apparatus to fatigue sealants during outdoor exposure was previously reported(Williams et al.,2002).We now report the results from 18 months outdoor exposure.Methods for data analysis and the advantages and disadvantages of the test protocol are discussed.To improve the cyclic fatigue test,a new motor-driven test apparatus was constructed.This new apparatus can fatigue materials with input from thermal-or moisture-driven cyclic movement.In addition to measuring the material response during weathering,various nondestructive experiments can be done during the exposure(load-deflection at various strain-rates/temperatures or stress relaxation experiments).Data from the two types of apparatus will be presented and will show how the failure of individual specimens could be linked to an exact time and weather event.
