Knot Staining.A Contribution to Test Method Development

A test for the efficiency of coating systems to block against knot staining is under development in the European standardisation organisation CEN(CEN/TC 139/WG2).The principle is simple:pine panels containing a knot are coated with the test system,exposed to a brief accelerated weathering cycle and assessed by measuring the colour difference between the knot and the surrounding panel.Difficulties however arise in practice because of the great variability of the wood substrate.The present work desribes how the test method may be improved by governing test parameters closely,and by specifying procedures and measurements carried out during the test regime.E.g.has it been shown that the time interval between machining of test panels and coating is of considerable importance for the test capability.Temperature during the weathering cycle is equally decisive.A concept using matched samples of panels coated with the system under test and a reference system has been evaluated.The idea was to minimise the influence from the substrate on the test result.However it appeared that the capability of the test method to discriminate between different stain blocking systems was not improved by this approach.9 different water borne primers against stain discolouration have been tested along with references like 2-pack polyurethane paint and schellac knotting.The test results are promising for 3 of the test systems.Flame plasma ionisation has been tried too as a means of reducing knot staining.
