Many factors influence the performance of exterior coatings and may become the rate,or outcome-determining factor.Failure is usually gradual rather than catastrophic,and not readily quantified.Moreover from the perspective of the end-user there are different types of failure including mechanical faults,appearance change and biodegradation.Under the auspices of COST E18,a working group(WG2)has reviewed methods of measuring and predicting durability and service life,with a view to relating these to the causal factors.Opportunities and needs for further work are identified.This review is drawn from the activities of COST E18* and will be incorporated into the final report of the Action.
