Low density earlywood is more rapidly eroded than denser latewood when wood is exposed to the weather,possibly because it is more susceptible to photodegradation.FTIR-microscopy was used to examine the depth of photodegradation in Japanese cedar earlywood and latewood exposed to artificial sunlight emitted by a xenon lamp(375W/m~2 within the 300 to 700nm spectral range),and the relationship between the density of the tissue types and depth of photodegradation.The depth of photodegradation in earlywood and latewood in specimens exposed to artificial light for 1500 hours were 650 and 200 urn,respectively,and there was an inversely proportional relationship between depth of photodegradation and wood density.These findings explain why earlywood is more rapidly eroded than latewood during weathering,and more generally the inverse relationship between the density of wood species and their rate of erosion during artificial and natural weathering.
