Tall fescue grass (Festuca amndinacea) plants grown in the USA and other countries for cattle feed and for seed production are often contaminated by the growth of an endophyte fungus (Neotyphodium coenophialum) that has been shown to produce alkaloidstoxic to animals (Oliver, 1997). Billion dollar losses to the cattle industry have been recorded in the USA from this grassland toxicosis (Oliver, 1997). Tall fescue grass straw is a by-product of the Oregon grass-seed industry that has been proposed as a source of bedding for poultry as a less costly alternative to sawdust (Hermes et al., 1999).
