We describe a new method for solving the inverse scattering problem to determine the shape of a scatterer D from the far field pattern "oo for scattering of time-harmonic waves This method may be interpreted as a hybrid of the decomposition method due to Kirsch and Kress and regularized Newton iteration methods for solving the nonlinear ill-posed operator equation F(T) = "oo with the operator F mapping the boundary F of the scatterer D onto the far field The new method does not require a forward solver and its feasibility is demonstrated through a numerical example.
