An attack on a nation's crops, rangelands or forests could reduce crop yield and quality, consumer confidence, economic health, and possibly human nutrition. Most countries do not currently have adequate resources to quickly detect new plant pathogensor to unambiguously identify and trace them. Strategies for securing our plant resources must include prevention and preparedness. A strong national security plan should include steps for: (a) early detection and diagnostic systems, (b) microbial forensic technology , (c) epidemiological data for modeling, (d) effective and reasonable policies and guidelines, (e) a distributed physical and administrative infrastructure, (f) a national coordination plan and infrastructure, and (g) linkage to a strong, cooperative international initiative to coordinate security efforts at a global level.
