A series of simplified numerical experiments are performed on the oscillation of cables of cable-stayed bridges, due on one hand to parametric resonance because of traffic and on the other to wind forces. Isolated cables or couples of parallel cables are considered, connected to each other and with the bridge by very thin pretensioned cross-ties, exhibiting hysteretic stress-strain behavior, or by diagonal bars. Also a small additional mass on the one cable of the couple is tried. It is found that, when the two cables have not identical dynamic characteristics, the hysteretic damping of the interconnecting cross-tie proves effective in reducing cables oscillations.
