Standardization of data formats utilized by experimental and analytical structural dynamics application software is desirable for many reasons. Primarily, the portability of data between different hardware and software platforms gives the user complete flexibility to solve problems using appropriate hardware and software capabilities. Since no international standards currently exist, the use of published (documented) industry standards can serve as de facto standards until standards can be developed and accepted at the international level. ASCII Universal Files (UF) and Neutral Files (NF) are discussed as possible alternatives.
