In the analysis of vertical process vessels found in the petrochemical industry, such as fractionators, distillation columns, smoke stacks, etc., an important parameter used in wind and seismic analyses is the fundamental frequency of such equipment. Except for very simple columns of uniform wall thickness and uniform weight distribution, no easy method exists to obtain such frequencies. The finite element method can always be used to obtain natural frequencies, but for a designer working with his desk top personal computer, the time and effort required for a finite element solution often exceeds the time and resources available. This paper describes a method to obtain natural frequencies of tall vertical or long horizontal process vessels using the personal computer and a spread sheet program such as Lotus 1-2-3 or similar. Rayleigh's method is the basis for frequency calculations. All integrations and other lengthy arithmetical operations are broken down into manageable segments and are then automatically combined to yield the desired frequencies. Any number of sections of different stiffness can be used, combined with any number of sections of different mass. Although this method is chiefly used for cantilever type vertical towers or smoke stacks, it can also be used to find frequencies of equipment with two or more supports; for example, horizontal vessels on two supports or vertical vessels supported on the ground with lateral supports at higher elevations. Results of dynamometer measurements on a vibrating refinery fractionators are given and compared with numerical calculations using the method described in this paper.
