Due to the increasingly competitive market situation the ground vehicle industry, and in particular the passenger car industry, makes important investments in new or expanded test facilities. These investments include engine test cells, chassis dynamometer cells, power train test cells, modal test labs as well as specialized facilities for in house pass-by noise analysis and road simulation. To ensure appropriate return on these large infrastructure investments, test lab managers have come forward with stringent requirements for fully integrated computer based testing systems. This paper describes a more strategic approach towards the integrated test laboratory and an implementation of these concepts based on the LMS CADA-X system. Maximum utilization of the testing infrastructure is achieved through a distributed network of Test Stations and Analysis Stations. Analysis Stations can be used for test preparation and test object description, as well as for post processing and analysis of data received from the Test Stations. The Test Stations consist of a similar engineering workstation expanded with a modular, multi-channel frontend. The Test Station controls auxiliary laboratory infrastructure, such as roller benches, microphone switching systems, etc. Special attention has been given to optimization of automated test procedures for general noise and vibration measurements, run-up/run-down measurements, fast order tracking, modal testing, as well as specialized procedures for in-house pass-by noise testing and road simulation.
