Humic substances(HS)are complex organic molecules comprising the majority of dissolved organic matter(DOM)in freshwater ecosystems.With concentrations between 1 and 50 mg/L(seldom even more),HS exceed the organic carbon of all living organisms by roughly one order of magnitude(Wetzel 2001,Steinberg 2003).In contrast to outdated paradigms that consider HS refractory or even inert,recent findings show that HS alter growth and reproduction of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans(Hoss et al.2001).Furthermore,HS increased the hatching rate,improved the somal constitution,and impacted the sex ratio of the swordtail Xiphophorus helleri(Meinelt et al.in press).Up to now,nothing is known about the potential endocrine disruption of HS on amphibian reproduction and on thyroid system.Since previous studies using the nematode C.elegans were carried out with natural isolates,a diffuse contamination by xeno-or phyto-estrogens cannot be excluded,but seems very unlikely.Nevertheless,the synthetic contamination-free HS1500 was applied in subsequent studies.
