What magic does the year 2010 forebode that it should be the focus of the “hopes and frustrations” of our 13th ISO International Seminar? Does the year suggest a cataclysmic event similar to Julius Caesar’s Ides of March or the prognostications ofthe Oracle of Delphi concerning the tragedy of Oedipus Rex? Far from them. But for us in the sugar industry, its approach is an invitation to seriously plot our course of action now, for 2010 is the end of the first decade of this century. Will that year usher in the period in which ethanol becomes the sugarcane industry’s main product and sugar as we know it today taking a back seat?
