摘要

Introduction: Stigma and discrimination are two of the major problems faced by people living with HIV/AIDS. Method: A nationwide representative survey based on a multi-stage probability sampling design was used to select 10090 persons, of which 5128 were women. Results: Using the t-test, it was found that women were more likely to exhibit discriminatory attitudes towards people living with HIV compared with men, whether on a personal level with relatives or on an extra familial level with colleagues or community members. Even after controlling for education, the differences regarding discrimination remained. Misconceptions on modes of transmission of HIV were also higher among women. Conclusions: Misconceptions need to be addressed and care and support programmes in Nigeria will need to strengthen the coping mechanisms of women to care for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs).
