In-hive transfer of pollen was studied by analysing the pollen on the bodies of young in-hive bees and foraging bees of the same honeybee colony. The colony was placed and opened in a bee-tight greenhouse with flowering carrot, celery and endive, andsamples of bees were taken in the course of one day. The density of pollen on the bodies of young bees inside the hive rapidly built up to about 0.5 % of that found on the foragers on each of the three plant species. A similar amount was apparently transferred to the foragers. Therefore we conclude that in-hive transfer of pollen between honey bees enhances cross-pollination of plants.
