In 1999, Tubal, et al., studied the boundary layer over Metro Manila and its effect on pollutant concentration. They observed that low boundary layer height led to high pollution concentration over the area. Sea breeze was found to have greatly reduced the height of the boundary layer. However, there were sudden changes in the structure of the boundary layer that could not be explained using the meteorological data that were on hand. With satellite cloud pictures made available, it was observed that much of the sudden changes in the boundary layer structure could have been caused by the presence of cumulus congestus clouds and convective cells over the area. These sudden changes, which include decreasing the height of the boundary layer, were also found to have affected the pollution concentration. This paper cites some examples of such observations based on May 1-4,1999 boundary layer data.
