We present the average results obtained for the stratosphere from the period 1999 to 2003 for the 589 nm integrated backscatter and scattering ratio measured by the INPE lidar. We also present temperature and density profiles derived from a total pure rotational Raman channel. The data obtained from the Raman channel is adjusted to the Rayleigh scattering around 35 km to derive a density profile from 17 to 75 km free from aerosol contamination. Monthly, seasonal and annual averages of this profile as well as the complete Rayleigh profile were used in this analysis. The average density and derived temperature profiles compare well with data derived from TOVS measurements. Integrated backscatter from 17 to 35 km. shows an aerosol injection or redistribution from other latitudes in 2000. The Raman data show that day-to-day variations in the density profile are sufficiently small as to justify our normal procedure of using just 4 seasonal density profiles to derive scattering ratios for all our data.
