The world of oil and gas production and distribution is changing rapidly. As increasing numbers of assets chase decreasing reserves the demand for information has never been higher. At the same time personnel capable of analysing and using the data are in decline as energy companies endeavour to reduce their overhead. This situation demands a solution that makes it easier for asset managers and engineers to access and share information securely regardless of time or location. The good news is that the network/infrastructure already exists and, furthermore, the technology needed to channel it is already installed on the majority of today's computers and everybody already knows how to use it. It is the web browser. This paper will discuss the role that the Internet can play in changing the way that assets are managed and the possibilities for improved accuracy, safety and profitability.
