This paper focuses on the advocacy strategies we've used over the past six years in a small community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in promoting the design and construction of passive solar, super-insulated houses at high latitude. I am addressing not the technology, which has been detailed in previous ASES papers and presentations starting in 1999. Rather, I am focusing on communication strategies and results experienced from 1998 to the present in building energy efficient housing and educating and stimulating not only the immediate community, but extending public awareness to the state, national, and international levels. All this is done by a small group of people with a modest budget and minimal time availability. This paper will also connect our advocacy practices to meaningful rhetorical and organizational communication practices with suggestions for others interested in developing or sharpening their advocacy strategies.
