摘要

I. INTRODUCTION The "Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport" (InSight) mission will deliver a lander to the surface of Mars during the 2018 Earth to Mars opportunity. InSight will provide scientific knowledge critical to understanding the fundamental processes of terrestrial-planet formation and evolution. The investigation is conducted at Mars, where unlike on Earth, the fingerprints of these processes have been preserved across four billion years. The InSight Mission directly responds to priorities advocated by the 2003 and 2011 Planetary Decadal Surveys. The mission was originally planned to be launched in 2016; however, in December 2015 NASA postponed the launch to the next Mars opportunity of May of 2018, to allow time for the NASA/CNES team to repair the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) instrument. SEIS was (and is) required to meet the Science goals of the mission and it was not holding the vacuum required to properly function on the surface of Mars~1.
