Buses are the main passenger transport mode, and important sources of human exposure to air pollution in most cities of developing countries. Measures to reduce emissions from transit buses play a prominent role in air pollution planning in such cities. Heretofore, there have been few reliable data on actual in-use emissions from transit buses - either the existing bus fleets or the lower-emitting vehicles being considered to replace them. This paper reports the results of on-board emission measurements on public transit buses using a variety of fuels and emission control technologies.
