Over the last year, the Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center has worked in partnership with the Army Environmental Center, the Economic Development Institute and Georgia Tech Research Institute of the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Tennessee, to provide in-depth EMS implementation assistance to 29 military installations in the southeastern U.S. This presentation will provide project background and rationale; successes, challenges encountered, and lessons learned in implementation; and results in comparison to DoD performance metrics. In addition, this presentation will describe efforts underway that leverage this military/partnership in new areas such as Environmental Sustainability Management Systems (ESMSs) which integrates the operational benefits of an EMS with the strategic benefits of sustainability.
