The aim of this study was to report the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in stoma patients in Iran. 70 patients with permanent colostomy or ileostomy who had routine visits in Iranian Colostomy Association in Tehran in summer 2004, entered the study. Each patient reported their levels of distress by completing a version of the self-administered General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). 34.3% of the males and 62.9% of the female subjects scored high enough to be considered as having psychiatric problems. There was a significant difference in GHQ mean scores between males and females. The overall findings suggest that the rate of psychiatric problems in stoma patients -especially in women- is considerably high and these results demonstrate the need for prolonged psychological consideration of stoma patients.
