To evaluate and certify safety-related control systems in the field of machinery, several international standards may be applied. IEC 61508 and IEC 62061 provide general guidelines for electrical, electronic or programmable electronic parts (E/E/PES). Both rely very much on lifecycle issues and probabilistic estimation of the hardware reliability but are difficult to apply for "small" control systems and are not suitable for control systems using a mixed technology (i.e. mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic mixed with E/E/PES). The revision of ISO 13849-1, formerly known as EN 954-1, which is widely accepted in Europe, tries to combine deterministic and probabilistic requirements in a practicable manner: the structure of the control system (e.g. redundancy and testing) as well as probabilistic properties (failure rates of components, diagnostic coverage of tests, common cause failure rates) are used to determine the so called "performance level" (PL) of the safety-related control system. This PL is comparable to the safety integrity level (SIL) of both IEC 61508/62061. But unlike the above mentioned IEC-standards, prEN ISO 13849 puts emphasize on easy and clearly defined methods to evaluate all relevant quantities defining the PL.
