Gaseous mercury monitoring in the vicinity of a mercury storage site: The MERSADE Project (EU LIFE-Environment Program)

Atmospheric mercury and its species pose a risk to human health, because high concentrations can induce hydrargyrism. On the other hand, in low concentrations mercury may undergo transformation into methylmercury, which is bioacumulable in fish and produces the so-called Minamata disease. We present here data on mercury emissions from a metallic mercury storage facility located at the Las Cuevas mining complex (Almaden mining district; Spain). Our data have been obtained during the tenure of a LIFE-ENV funded project, aimed to the search of new technologies for the storage surplus metallic mercury form the European industry. Our data indicate that the main emission source is a mercury handling warehouse in the Las Cuevas complex. More than 99.9﹪ of the local mercury species is gaseous elemental mercury, with concentrations largely higher than in other localities, after published data. However, concentrations of the rest of species are in the same order of magnitude as available published data for other localities worldwide, what is a clear indication of limited local interspecies transformations.
